The Mitzvah Corps Costa Rica teens have been working incredibly hard over the past week! Our days in Yorkin working with the Bribri were both challenging yet wonderfully rewarding. The people of the village were so welcoming to us, and Matt (our guide) pointed out that he thought they had bonded more to our group than any other group in the past! It may have been our size – we sort of adopted the idea that we may be small, but we are mighty, completing such work as digging drainage ditches, hauling freshly cut planks for buildings, thatching roofs, and even planting trees to offset our carbon footprint.
Meals abrooad have proved to be a bit of a challenge for us as well, as almost every meal has consisted of what we have nicknamed, “rice, beans, and etc”. It can get old fast, but thanks to everyone’s new favorite condiment, salsa lizano, we have persevered, and will return home with enhanced palets!
Yesterday we headed out to view an active volcano. The ride to and from the volcano, though gorgeous, was both twisty and bumpy and not for the weak of stomach… as we discovered. When we first arrived, the fog was a bit of a problem when trying to view the crater, but as we spent a bit of time there, our patience paid off and it cleared for just long enough for us to get some real awesome shots!
With only one day left, I know it seems a bit late to write a message about our trip, but as you can imagine in the rain forest an Internet connection is not a luxury we have access to a lot. We are all surviving the wilderness, and having the time of our lives!
